The Oregon Shakespeare Festival will present the world premiere of UniSon by OSF ensemble-in-residence UNIVERSES, directed by Robert O’Hara in the Angus Bowmer Theatre through October 28, 2017.

UniSon is a high-energy, multimedia, music-filled theatrical experience inspired by the poetry of beloved playwright August Wilson, created by UNIVERSES in association with Constanza Romero. Granted access to Wilson’s poetry catalogue, UNIVERSES blends it into a mythically modern story of a dying poet who leaves a mysterious box to his apprentice, with strict instructions to destroy it. Curious, the apprentice opens it, releasing terrors that tormented the master throughout his life. This world premiere fuses poetry, theater, dance and music to explore the reconstruction of collective memory, blending UNIVERSES' one-of-a-kind artistry with excerpts of Wilson's poetry.

For this new musical, UNIVERSES’ Mildred Ruiz-Sapp, Steven Sapp and William Ruiz, a.k.a. Ninja have teamed up with co-composers Broken Chord and the critically acclaimed Toshi Reagon to craft the show’s mix of blues, hip-hop, R&B, classical music and jazz. The cast of UniSon features Steven Sapp as Poet, Asia Mark as Apprentice, Christiana Clark as Terror #1: Seamstress, William Ruiz, a.k.a. Ninja as Terror #2: Butcher, Kevin Kenerly as Terror #3: Boxer, Rodney Gardiner as Terror #4: Black Smith, Mildred Ruiz-Sapp as Terror #5: Hunter and Yvette Monique Clark as Terror #6: Momma.  Luke Stevens as Terror #7, the Soldier. All performers play ensemble roles as well.  More info: www.osfashland.org

Henry IV, Part One (February 22–October 28) by William Shakespeare

With Lauren Modica in the ensemble!

OSF’s journey through Shakespeare’s history tetralogy continues after 2016’s acclaimed sold-out run of Richard II. Once again, the Festival’s intimate Thomas Theatre will play host to the political intrigues, machinations and battles of early 15th-century England, with a healthy dose of Falstaffian comedy thrown in. Henry Bolingbroke endures an uneasy reign as king, while his wayward son Prince Hal has fallen under the spell of Sir John Falstaff and his merry band of hooligans at the Boar’s Head Tavern. Rebel forces are threatening King Henry’s rule, and Prince Hal’s time to prove himself worthy of the crown is nigh.

Director Lileana Blain-Cruz, director of OSF’s Much Ado about Nothing in 2015, returns for her first foray into a Shakespeare history play. “

The cast features Jeffrey King as King Henry IV; Daniel José Molina as Prince Hal; G. Valmont Thomas as Sir John Falstaff; Tyrone Wilson as Northumberland and Sheriff; Michael Gabriel Goodfriend as Poins, Mortimer and Douglas; Robert Vincent Frank as Westmoreland and Bardolph; Jeremy Gallardo as Prince John and Francis; Lauren Modica as Peto and Glendower; Nemuna Ceesay as Lady Percy and Vernon; Michele Mais as Mistress Quickly; Alejandra Escalante as Hotspur; Kimberly Scott as Worcester, Vintner and Chamberlain; Moses Villarama as Sir Walter Blunt and Gadshill; and Rachel Kostrna as Lady Mortimer.

The scenic designer is Adam Rigg, costumes are by Dede M. Ayite, and lighting design is by Yi Zhao.  The composer and sound designer is Palmer Hefferan, and dramaturgs are Lydia G. Garcia and Amrita Ramanan. Voice and text director is Rebecca Clark Carey; fight director is Christopher DuVal and Jill Rendall is stage manager.

MAN OF LA MANCHA

Music by Mitch Leigh. Lyrics by Joe Darion

PERFORMANCES at the Keller Auditorium

June 9, 2017, Friday 7:30pm, June 11, 2017, Sunday 2:00pm, June 15, 2017, Thursday 7:30pm, and June 17, 2017, Saturday 7:30pm. Tickets range from $90-150 each.

Opera News praises Man of La Mancha for its “warmth and wit,” “full-bodied, Spanish-tinged score,” and “genuine dramatic depth,” but you will love it for how it makes you feel.

Author Miguel de Cervantes is about to go before the Spanish inquisition. In this play-within-a-play, he invites his fellow prisoners to “enter into his imagination.” Assuming the character of Don Quixote, he engages them all in a tale of chivalry, undoing wrongs, and bringing justice to the world. With songs like “The Impossible Dream,” it remains one of the most enduring—and endearing—works of American musical theater.  Sung in English with text projected above the stage.
