Vigil for Keaton Otis on Friday

Friday, May 12th marks the seventh year since Keaton Otis was shot and killed by Portland Police.

The 25-year-old was shot 23 times during a traffic stop on the corner of Northeast Sixth Avenue and Halsey Street near Lloyd Center. Back in 2010, a grand jury found no criminal wrongdoing on the part of the officers, but community leaders and activists continue to investigate and seek justice.

Since his death, a vigil has been held on the 12th of each month on the same corner where Otis was confronted and ultimately died at the hands of the police. This month’s vigil is being held at Maranatha Church in Northeast Portland (4222 NE 12th).

KBOO reporter Jenna Yokoyama spoke with vigil organizer, Portland NAACP president, and KBOO programmer Joann Hardesty.
