Leah Harris on the Murphy Bill

Host Will Hall speaks with Leah Harris, psychiatric abuse survivor and organizer in the Campaign for Real Change in Mental Health Policy, about the Murphy Bill, which proposes some controversial changes in mental health policy.

The proposed Families in Mental Health Crisis Act (also known as The Murphy Bill), HR 2646 sponsored by Representative Tim Murphy of Pennsylvania, is currently before Congress. The Murphy Bill proposes some drastic changes to the mental health laws and policies in the United States. Are these changes in policy necessary to curb violence in America? Can the forced treatment and hospitalization of adults in mental health crisis end mass shootings in the United Sates? What does the pharmaceutical industry stand to gain from this bill?

Leah Harris is a psychiatric abuse survivor, both of her parents experienced psychiatric abuse, and she is currently an organizer for the Campaign for Real Change in Mental Health Policy. Leah recently completed an investigative report on the Murphy Bill and will be discussing what this bill would mean to people experiencing a mental health crisis, how the gun lobby is involved, and the role of Otsuka Pharmaceuticals.
