Sachiko M and Ami Yoshida

“What is that irritating high-pitched drone in the background?” Daniel wondered as he started listening to Otomo Yoshihide's jazz group cover Eric Dolphy's classic “Out to Lunch!” “Is there something wrong with this CD?” Then the rest of the collective were over there, listening to the album. A few members couldn't hear the high-pitched drones, at the beginning and the end of many tracks, unless they really listened. It sounded something like tinnitus. “This is head-ache inducing,” someone remarked.

Tonight we listen to the woman responsible for those sine-wave high-tones, Sachiko Matsubara, also known as Sachiko M. We'll listen to her “Sine Wave Solo” album, as well as collaborations with other musicians, for some challenging extreme austere minimalism. To add a slight bit of relief from the sine waves, the show will also air Ami Yoshida, who uses her voice to create music in a similar vein. These two women also perform together as Cosmos, and the few daring listeners still tuned in will listen to that as well.
