What to do about Oregon's sex offenders?

The Oregon Attorney General's Task Force is lobbying for passage of a law that would extend the statute of limitations on sex crimes. Proponents say the present time limits make it difficult to prosecute crimes that often take place over periods of many years followed sometimes by even longer periods before victims come forward to report the crime. But will more prosecutions create more justice for the victims and the community as well as address the underlying causes for this social problem?

Jo Ann and Dave will talk with Virginia Pickles Jones about the upcoming Walk Across Oregon, an event organized by sex abuse victims to raise awareness of the proposed law. Jones, a victim of sexual abuse, is active in the Oregon's restorative justice movement and in working with victims of sexual abuse by members of the Catholic clergy. Dave and Jo Ann will also talk with Dr. Cynthia Steinhauser, Ph.D., L.C.S.W., about what treatment strategies exist inside the outside the criminal justice system and what barriers Measure 11 poses to long-term solutions to sex crimes in our community. Dr. Steinhauser is the former director of the Sex Offender Treatment Program, Correctional Services of Canada, and current director of Portland's Sexual Abuse Clinic.
