Cover crops are the single best thing you can do for your soil during the winter months, so plant them this month. Plus storing winter squash, pears, apples, potatoes, and carrots.

Host Glen Andresen and guest Jim Gilbert are back in the studio for a live show! It's time to harvest pears and apples and soon, winter squash. We offer tips for conditons to enhance long-term storage. Plus, Jim talks up Cornelian cherries, which are ripening now. September is the main month to plant cover crops, and this is thee best thing you can do to preserve and enrich your soil over the winter months. We offer our favorite types and ways to plant them. Finally, Jim is off to Korea this month right after the show and we'll get a preview of what he hopes to find there.

As always, we'll have a new Plant of the Month (pollinizer plants and pollinator insects...or is it the other way around?) and a new Garden Stumper (the winner gets a free sharpening of a hand tool from Cully Farm Store in Northeast Portland!). Plus, our Dirtbag Dictionary term  is "exudation."  And, of course, what's annoying Glen this month.

Don't forget, if you have a gardening question, and don't want to call in, you can always email us at thedirtbag@kboo.org -- we'll answer your question on the air during the next show. Furthermore, you can record a voice memo of your gardening question on your phone and email that to us. We will play it on the air next month and answer your question.

The Dirtbag... Listen. Laugh. Learn.
