In classic imperialist style, the U.S. exempts itself from the standards that it applies to others. This is a fundamental tenet of American exceptionalism. International law? Only for designated enemies, not for Washington and its vassals. Obey the master or face the consequences. Assassinations, sanctions, bombings, invasions and occupations are all tools of the empire to enforce its diktats. As George H. W. Bush once said, echoing Tony Soprano, "What we say goes." The arrogance is bi-partisan. To wit, Madeleine Albright, Clinton's Secretary of State who pronounced, "We have come to the determination that the Iraqi people would benefit if they had a government that really represented them." Might the American people have a government that really represented them? Can't ask that question.

This program is part of Alternative Radio's Zinn Centenary Celebration. Throughout August we'll be featuring some of his most memorable lectures.
