The Outside World
Every friday at midnight, daniel shows up and makes a pot of unusually strong coffee and sees who will drop in. Sometimes there are filmmakers, sometimes there are authors, often there are live bands who have excess energy after their gigs. Sometimes there is trouble. Sometimes there are paper suits. It's a lot like the old Steve Allen Tonight show. (He never knew what was gonna happen either). daniel's role models are Steve Allen, Henry Miller and Sol Hurok. His favorite color is purple. (What are we supposed to write here?) He likes long walks on the beach and settling down for an evening with a Margaret Miller mystery. He always does radio barefoot, too. He thinks it helps him be more receptive to the whims of the radio gods. (did a lot of acid back in the 70s)

Mint Chicks LIVE on The Outside World
Mint Chicks are huge back in New Zealand, but here in Portland, they're actually enjoying a degree of anonymity they can't get back home. We saw them playing at the Ash Street Saloon to about 6 people. They were having fun. We decided to mess with their unknown status by sneaking them onto the radio....late at night...

The Quadraphonnes on The Outside World

The The Quadrophonnes dropped in to The Outside World again (last time we crammed them all into the air room!) and Daniel managed a pretty sweet mix. The Quads are Mary Sue Tobin (alto and soprano), Chelsea Luker (alto and soprano, but no soprano tonight), Mieke Bruggerman (baritone) and Michelle Medler (tenor) and they not only knock off your socks with their incredible chops and dizzying arrangements, but they are hella sexy to boot! (sorry, they are!)
Here they treat us to a set of tunes from their new CD (and a few others). The CD is called, “Music To Watch Girls By”. Listen a bit and head down to Jimmy Mak’s for their CD release party next Friday, March 27th, from 8 pm til midnight. ALL AGES til 9:30! Jimmy Mak’s is at NW 10th and Everett.

Nahko and Max on the Outside World
Hawaiin singer-songwriter Nahko and Medicine for the People:
Nahko's music is not easily described. With influences spanning from the majestic mountains of Alaska, on down to the old growth forests of California, to the suburbs of Portland, to the middle of the Hawaiian tropics, his music crafts wisdom and intuition into stories and melodies that echo from your ears to your heart.
On the tip of the arrow in 'Medicine for the People' is Connecticut native Max Ribner. After studying flugelhorn at Berklee School of Music and graduating, he joined Americore, and headed out west. Guided into the mountains of the NW and further directed to the Big Island of Hawaii, Max evolved, churning life and music into the most simplistic form.

Amanda Richards and Ashia on The Outside World
Amanda Richards was once heard by host Daniel playing on the downtown streets at the tender age of 19. Her voice, material and delivery belie her years--she has a bluesy feel of someone who has been around the block--and she has come a long way since then. Her upcoming performance at The Aladdin (headlining!--for the 2nd time there) is on Feb. 20.
She is joined here by the formidable Ashia Grzesik on cello (who will also accompany Amanda at The Aladdin), and, as you will hear, Ashia has a few of her own gems up her sleeve as she enthralls us with a couple of solo numbers. Ashia moved to Portland in October from Las Vegas, where she played in the Cirque du Soleil.

Shoehorn on The Outside World
Shoehorn is a well-known vaudevillian who plays with Baby Gramps as well as his own projects. He tap-dances amazing rhythms while playing sax (we had a mic at his feet).
As I said earlier, Max sat in with ALL the above performers, as well as with Nahko who performed some of his original tunes with Max.

Icarus project
12 step programs were mentioned as a community mental health sollution, but they share systemic problems with popular mental health instituions / industry. One community mental health program that attempts to offer a solution without these issues is the Icarus Project. They have a bigger chapter in SF, and I don't know if there is a chapter in PDX, but there is no reason why interested parties couldn't start one.
Seeking Sarah B
Daniel! This is Sarah B from the long ride up to Pdx. I am trying to locate you for camera and otherwise! Please email me or call! email: sbeezus@gmail.com
I would love to talk with you more about the subject matter we began to explore and see if your show wouldn't be a good host for it!
Look forward to hearing from you and keep up the good work!
SARAH B! WOW!
BROKEN RECORDS ALE
TONIGHT ON THE OUTSIDE WORLD:
It's time for our annual "Broken Record Sale Preview Show", meaning: We have a huge record and book sale (getting bigger every year) where we receive donations for months of REALLY interesting stuff (consider our iconoclastic audience), and then the sale in the summer, right?
So... one year, i came in to do my show and looked around at all these boxes of insane records, tapes, CDs and books and got the idea we should just lock the library and play nothing for 3 hours except what was for sale the next day--sort of a "home shopping network" thing, only... crazier. Much crazier. It's a fun and often hilarious show. We'll have 4 or 5 DJs in different studios mixing this stuff, and kids and adults reading from bizarre books in the talk radio studio, all of it mixed collage-fashion.
We will take bids this year on what you hear....
A Walrus Weekend--last
So Knox, myspace friend, wrote in his status that he was "sitting on a cornflake, waiting for the van to come", I wrote back "semolina pilchard", he said he couldn't believe I'd just said that.
Then Michael asked me to design a biz card for him as the GRC listcop that says "goo goo g'joob"
You dear Daniel must be the "Expert textpert" per your penchant for texting.
