Denise Morris hosts this Episode of the Old Mole Variety Hour which includes
  • Bill Resnick interviews Eric Laursen an independent journalist who recently published the book The People’s Pension: The War Against Social Security, from Reagan to Obama, available from AK Press. Discussion will focus on how and why Social Security survived in the face of elite attacks since its inception. Laursen is part of the movement seeking to expand Social Security, not just raising benefits but involving recipients in the battle for a just economy.
  • Jan Haaken talks with Patsy Kullberg, (also an Old Mole), about her new novel, Girl in the River. The novel--a work of historical fiction--centers on the struggles of a fictional working class young woman, finding her way in the actual world of corruption, vice squads and abortion politics during WWII and its aftermath in Portland. Jan talks with Patsy about what reproductive rights activists might learn from this period in Portland's history--and how novels contribute to our capacity to imagine that a better world is possible.
  • Jan Haaken interviews Red, an activist and representative with SWOP USA--Sex Workers Organizers Project. She is active with the Portland SWOP Chapter and also director of a new outreach program in Portland for sex workers (STROLL). They talk about the recent position taken by Amnesty International calling for the decriminalization of prostitution, and some of the controversy around this position.
