Political theorist Michael Signer has been involved in politics since he organized a high school Earth Day club nearly 30 years ago. Now, as Mayor of Charlottesville, Virginia, he has a first hand look at the trickiness of collectively wielding local power even as the national political enviroment is toxic. Don Merrill talks with Mr. Signer, author of "Demagogue: The fight to save Democracy from its Worst Enemy" about what creates demagogues, how the founding fathers tried to prepare for them and why presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump may be the lastest in a string of American demagogues.
