Daniel chats with 2 very different jazz people: an Albanian vocalist and an 82 yr old legend

KBOO's Daniel Flessas today speaks with two very different jazz musicians --

Elina Duni is an Albanian jazz vocalist (how many times have you heard that before?) who is inspired by the traditional folk songs of her grandparents' time in her homeland of Albania and is updating these songs into the jazz idiom, but no less emotional, passionate and expressive. She is flying into Portland today and will be performing tonight at Ivorie's Jazz Lounge (14th & NW Flanders) in a show that will also feature Portland's own phenoms Battle Hymns & Gardens.

David Amram's career reads like Forrest Gump's. Somehow, this multi-instrumentalist has found himself performing with Monk, Bird and Diz, orchestral work with Leonard Bernstein, hung out with Lenny Bruce and Lord Buckley, and as a friend of Kerouac's and Ginsberg's, composed the score to their crazy little film Pull My Daisy. Having written some 300 symphonies, Amram (at the age of 82?) shows no signs of stopping, still traveling around the world, playing, composing and seriously hanging out. Daniel does his best to keep up. The film "David Amram: The First 80 Years" plays tomorrow night (Thursday) at the NW Fim Center's Whitsell Auditorium at 6:30 pm.
