OCCUPY THE STATE CAPITOL

The Oregon legislature convened today for a one-month special session to address the state’s three hundred million dollar budget deficit.

Occupy Wall Street activists from around the state marked the occasion by gathering at the State Capitol in Salem for a day of rallies, workshops and meetings with legislators.

One focus of this day of action is tax reform in Oregon.

Currently, many corporations in the state pay only a ten dollar minimum tax, even when their profits in the state are in the tens or hundreds of millions.

Kirk Leonard with Occupy Salem spoke to KBOO from inside the state capitol

Activists involved in the Occupy movement around the state are trying to build a statewide General Assembly to address the concerns of the ninety nine percent in the state of Oregon.

They are planning to participate in a national day of action on February 29th to ‘occupy the corporations’ and challenge the American Legislative exchange Council, or ALEC.
