Portland State University’s Institute for Sustainable Solutions spring lecture series opens tomorrow, March 30th, from 5 to 6.30pm. A screening of the documentary “The Area: A Journey through the Hanford Nuclear Reservation” will be followed by a discussion with the filmmaker, Cameron Salony.  Salony, an employee with the Department of Energy at Hanford, made the film as a way of documenting his own experience learning about the history of Hanford and its current status as one of the world’s largest environmental cleanup sites.  Topics include the government’s relationship with the Native American population that still lives in the area, Hanford’s 45 years of plutonium production, and the current cleanup effort.
The event is free and open to the public.

The American Red Cross is offering free preparedness classes.
With the Japan earthquake making headlines, many Oregonians are wondering whether they'd be prepared if such a disaster were to strike right here at home.  Classes will take place at the Oregon Trail Chapter, 3131 N. Vancouver Ave. (Portland), at two time slots 5 to 6pm and 7 to 8pm tomorrow and again next Wednesday at the same times. For more information, please visit www.oregonredcross.org or join our award-winning blog at www.oregonredcross.org/blog.

The classes will cover many facets of preparedness, including how to make an emergency plan. Participants will make disaster planning checklists which include: meeting places for family or household members; responsibilities for each household member; how to choose an out-of-area emergency contact person; and how to determine the best evacuation route. The instructor will also review how to assemble a disaster kit with essentials such as water, food, a battery-powered radio, a flashlight, medications and first aid supplies.
For those who cannot attend, a free interactive preparedness class is available online at www.oregonredcross.org/beredcrossready.
