Here comes the weekend community calendar for January 15th and 16th

The Intel Oregon FIRST LEGO League State Championship Tournaments is this weekend in Hillsboro.  Viewers can watch teams of 9-14 year olds who have won qualifying tournaments across the state and region. These teams have used off-the-shelf LEGO robotics kits to construct and program ingenious working robots, which complete as many missions as possible on a playing field.

The event is free and is this Saturday and Sunday from 9:30am to 2:30pm at the Liberty High School gymnasium, located at 21945 NW Wagon Way, Hillsboro, Oregon,

This sunday Washington County is holding their tenth annual Martin Luther King Day Celebration.  The event will have a wide variety of speakers including the keynote speaker; Oregon State Senator Suzanne Bonamici.  There will also be an award presentation for outstanding community service.

The event is this Sunday at 4pm at Southminster Presbyterian Church, 12250 Southwest Denney Road in Beaverton, and the event is free.  For more information about the 2011 Martin Luther King Celebration call Charla Chamberlain at 503-846-5792.

Every Sunday Evening there is a Free community film night behind the Star e Rose Cafe.  The films show thought-provoking, social and political documentaries and afterwards there are informal discussions afterwards about their thoughts & feelings on the film.  This Sundays film is Flow: for the love of water. Next sunday’s Film will be about permaculture and the last film of the month is Collapse, a film about the finacial crisis.

The films are on Sundays and start at 6pm and right behind the Star e Rose Cafe at 5014 NE 24th. ------------------------------------------------------

This January marks the 38th anniversary of Roe v. Wade.  As part of the struggle to protect the rights granted in that ruling a wide variety of groups, independent feminist women and men are organizing a counter picket of Oregon Right to Life’s planned vigil on the Capitol steps this Sunday.

The group will meet in Salem at 1:45pm at the corner of State St. and Waverly St. in front of the Supreme Court Building. If interested in car pooling from Portland or for more information, call Emma Allen at 503-240-4462.

The Portland Police Bureau is currently preparing their budget, and is inviting the community to provide input.  The Police Bureau would like to hear from people about their specific needs in regard to the core services the Police Bureau provides.

The Bureau has posted a survey on its website, where community members can identify the top three priorities facing their neighborhood that could benefit from increased police services or patrols. To access the survey, go to portland police dot com.
