Joseph Gallivan interviews Tom Manley the President of PNCA
On Tuesday December 8, 2015, Joseph Gallivan interviews Tom Manley, the President of the Pacific Northwest College of Art, who is leaving next year to become President of Antioch College in Ohio.

Manley talks about how the school is no longer a provincial undergraduate college and how digital natives don’t really recognize a digital-analog divide. Since he arrived from California 12 years go, Manley has helped raise the money for it to move to the 511 Building, and he has also seen his own four children develop into artists (admittedly, one of them is only 10.)

This episode was recorded at PNCA and edited by KBOO volunteer Sam Parrish.

From the PNCA website:

Tom Manley is a native of Baltimore, Maryland, where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in East Asian History and Education from Towson University. He earned his Masters in Asian Studies and a Doctorate in Education from the Claremont Graduate University in Claremont, California.
Before becoming president of Pacific Northwest College of Art (PNCA) in July 2003, Dr. Manley spent 22 years at the Claremont Colleges, mainly at Pitzer College, where he held a variety of administrative posts and served as a member of the faculty. He was instrumental in developing Pitzer’s nationally prominent study abroad program, including sites in China, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Italy, Japan, Nepal, Turkey, Venezuela, Wales and Southern Africa.
A specialist on Japan, he served as a scholar in residence at a women’s college outside of Osaka and later helped to write the curriculum for an American style liberal arts college, the first of its kind to be accredited by the Japanese Ministry of Education.
In addition to his study of Japan, Dr. Manley has written and presented on a variety of subjects related to international, intercultural and language education. He has also developed a number of cross-cultural and language learning innovations, including a highly praised portfolio journal system, known as the Fieldbook.
A student of poetry and a lover of food, Tom Manley is married to Susanne Hashim and they have a young daughter named Chedin. Tom also has a son, Dashiell, a step-daughter, Karina, and a step-son, Johan.
