Eric de Place with Sightline institute provides updates on the latest developments with oil trains
We've been covering oil trains for awhile on Locus Focus but until recently most news outlets carried few if any stories about what has now grown into a major concern. Across the United States and Canada worry about the danger of these barely regulated trains carrying potentially explosive cargoes of Bakken crude oil has garnered increasing attention in the mainstream news. Meanwhile more and more oil trains are passing through communities throughout North America, particularly in the Northwest.
On this episode of Locus Focus we are joined again by Eric de Place of Sightline Institute in Seattle, who early on raised alarms about the dangers and numbers of oil trains passing through our communities. Eric will give us an update on new proposed federal rules on tank car and oil train operations; the problem of railroads being radically under-insured against the risk of catastrophic explosion and how Oregon and Washington state pension money is funding some of the very same projects that are so controversial.
Eric de Place is policy director for Sightline Institue in Seattle, where he is a researcher, writer, speaker and policy analyst. He spearheads Sightline's work on climate and energy policy.
