What makes KBOO great? The people and the community power!

Meet Sekoynia Wright and Support KBOO Community Radio!

I believe that as KBOO continues to grow in new ways, so will I....

Plus, all new and increased donations will be matched 1:1 through December! Donate here today – thank you!

One of the most fun and interesting things about KBOO is all the great people you get to meet, work with and learn from. Sekoynia Wright has volunteered at KBOO since 2010 and has held many roles, including being recently voted by the KBOO membership onto the Board of Directors. We asked Sekoynia if she would share some of her thoughts during this “season of giving and sharing.”

KBOO: Tell us about yourself. Where did you grow up and what brings you to Portland? Sekoynia Wright: I’m originally from Salt Lake City, but I moved to Portland in the summer of 2009. I moved here to try something new and on my own. I learned about KBOO from a fellow KBOO volunteer family member after I had mentioned to her that I was a radio host at Salt Lake’s local community radio station, KRCL. I began volunteering at KBOO in the Spring of 2010. I’ve always had a much more progressive spirit that I really wanted to channel and I love that Portland and KBOO has many platforms to share in with others who do similar work.

KBOO is important because it is the most HONEST work that can be heard in today’s media.

KBOO: Do you have a favorite spot besides KBOO? Sekoynia: When I am not at KBOO or work, I’m at a library, a coffee shop, or organizing with other like minds to build for better communities. Or a favorite food in Portland? I enjoy Po Shines Restaurant if I want soul food that I may not feel like cooking myself!

You do A LOT of things here. What roles have you had at KBOO? The work I’ve done at KBOO has been in many areas; I’ve helped in KBOO’s newsroom, I have helped with outreach, and currently the host of Ear To The Streets of Portland on KBOO. I’m also on the board of directors.

What is your favorite thing to do while you’re here? When I’m working for programs on KBOO…I love hearing music from KBOO’s music library, editing audio, and helping to keep KBOO clean!

Why do you think KBOO is important? KBOO is important because it is the most HONEST work that can be heard in today’s media. Right now, with so much happening domestically and internationally…the people deserve to hear honest news coverage from people who are invested in seeking truth, honesty, and demanding transparency from those who are supposed to represent the people.

What motivated you to join the board? I joined KBOO’s board because I want to learn. I want to learn what KBOO needs to continue to thrive and what it will take to ensure that KBOO not only survives, but also evolves with our modern society and that we are still able to stick to KBOO’s core values. I believe that as KBOO continues to grow in new ways, so will I. I do realize that I have been entrusted with an important responsibility and that my goal as a board member is to do our KBOO members, listeners, and supporters proud.

What are you learning? I am learning the importance of communication and transparency…which are two entities that are hard to do. I am also learning what it means to work in a team-setting, with our differences, and working for the sake of our radio home. I am not the best, but I am learning and I LOVE it all.

Why do you think people should give to KBOO, especially during this new and increased donor match? Well first, I think that the new and increase donor match is awesome because it shows that people and/or local community based businesses have enough to give for other member matches and are seemingly interested in KBOO enough to invest in us! Also, with new people moving to Portland and in different communities…it is important that potential KBOO members have something that is local and real to turn to for something community based and is also inspired by the opportunity to match with donors who also support local communities to donate!
