Julia Alvarez

Join guest host,Sarika Mehta for an in-depth talk with  Dominican American writer, Julia Alvarez, author of 19 books. The latest is her memoir, A Wedding in Haiti: The Story of a Friendship, now in paperback. This is the story of an adventure she and her husband took in an effort to attend the wedding of a young Haitian man, Piti, who works on their coffee farm in the Dominican Republic. With only a week's notice, and unprepared with documentation, Alvarez braved the contentious border of the Dominican Republic and Haiti at the time of the devastating Haitian earthquake.

Julia Alvarez stopped by Portland for an event with Literary Arts. She chatted with guest host, Sarika Mehta at the Heathman Hotel about her adventure in Haiti, especially as a Dominican American woman. They also discussed the difficulties facing Haitians currently living in the Dominican Republic, and inspiration for her previous book In the Time of the Butterflies.

Tune in Tuesday, April 15 at 11 am to Stage and Studio to hear the interview and hear music by Piti himself!
