Joseph Gallivan interviews Scott Fyfe and Fred Schoening about their set design for Othello at PCS

On Tuesday April 29, 2014 at 11.30am Joseph Gallivan interviews Scott Fyfe and Fred Schoening. They are the Stage Designer and Technical Director at Portland Ceter Stage where they created the set for the current production of William Shakespeare's "Othello."

Fyfe and Schoening will talk about the concetpt of the set, how it was designed and physically made, and how it helps tell the story of Othello.

The set design looks like an Escher work, with stairs that go up and down creating a maze with places to hide and reveal. It is a two-story, castle-like structure that revolves 360 degrees, weighs about 2,000 pounds, and is operated by a five horsepower motor.

The set designer, Scott Fyfe, is based in Washington. Scott is the Resident Designer for Village Theater (in Issaquah, just outside of Seattle). This is his PCS debut.
PCS Technical Director Fred Schoening used six to seven layers of texture to create the stone and 104 castors to make it rotate.
