Health Care Forum: Oregon Public Health Association, Brian Johnson, Lila Wickham, Joyce Gaufin

Health and Health Care Forum

Brian Johnson, outgoing president of the Oregon Public Health Association, and Lila Wickham, incoming president, (pictured above) talk with Roberta Hall at the OPHA annual conference about public health concerns and about how the 500-member Association decides what issues it supports locally and in state ballot initiatives.

Then Joyce Gaufin, president of the American Public Health Association, (pictured below), talks about the state of public health in the country and in Oregon. Public health programs she praised include efforts to achieve universal health care; to resist infectious diseases (such as the enterovirus that has been affecting increasing numbers of children this year and Ebola, a major international threat); and various chronic diseases that are related, in part, to contemporary lifestyles and to the structure of our built environments. She called attention to connections between decisions made about city and regional planning and resultant health impacts.
