KBOO is open to the public! To visit the station, contact your staff person or call 503-231-8032.

Since 1978, women identified radio activists have had this forum on KBOO!
What? Is this really happening?  I thought to myself: “Here is a fifty some year old man, sitting at my kitchen table, describing to me, without me prompting the conversation, the strong women who influenced the way he lives his life.” He spoke about his mother, his grandmother, his aunt and other women activists he met throughout his life that have had a strong impact on him. Wow. My first conclusion was I am so lucky to have a friend like Christopher who is able to speak about the strong women in his life in a totally casual way. He talked about being Dine’ (Navajo) and the matriarchal social system that is at the heart of his believes and world view. And then I said to him “Thank you Chris! Thanks to you, I know that there is hope for the future.”

Many people think that a matriarchal society is the opposite of the patriarchy: a society where women rule. But it is not! After many conversations with Christopher, men, women, youth, genderqueer and gender non-confirming folks and after three years of contributing to KBOO’s feminist collective, Bread and Roses, I know that there is hope for the future and the patriarchy is not part of the picture. My hope is that we build partnerships together, partnerships that are founded on the belief that all of us are equal. But building partnerships can be a challenge for all of us because the patriarchy has conditioned us to believe we should fit into boxes, categories and only build alliances with people who look like us, think like us, pray to the same god. As Christopher says, “The patriarchy is not only hurting women. It is hurting men too.”

March is the “box” during which we are told to “celebrate” women’s history and their innumerable contributions to the world. Do just that, if you please! But, if just like me, you don’t believe it is constructive to limit the conversation to a month, or to only commemorate the significant “wins” of women throughout history, then join the Bread and Roses collective and our listenership every Fridays at 6pm. Since 1978, women identified radio activists have had this forum on KBOO as a testimony that every day, every Friday, every week, every month for 37 years is Women’s HERstory Month. The Bread and Roses collective gives “voice to those working for social justice and equity, globally and locally and we strive to challenge systems of oppression.”

March is Women's History Month but I urge you not to wait to speak about, or even think about the women who have impacted you. Just like Christopher, let’s speak about the women, men and gender diverse people we love and those who inspire us to be stronger and brighter, on a daily basis, at our kitchen tables, in the streets, on the air, everywhere!
