Portland’s Yiddish Hour has three new co-hosts—Ed Kraus, Liz Schwartz and Barry Lavine.

Yiddish Hour airs on KBOO 90.7 FM radio every Sunday from 10 to 11 a.m. Launched in 1979 by Jack Falk, the show has brought Jewish music and culture to Portland’s airwaves for 30 years.

“I’m so glad to see the show continuing in able hands,” said Falk, the show’s producer. “The radio audience gets served and I need a breather after 30 years of contributing my weekends.”

Falk has stepped back from the show, but his wife Reva continues to take one shift each month when she is in town. She said once a month is easy after all the weekends she’s been on the air over the past 30 years...

Mary Catherine Lamb died Aug. 15, 2009. She was a pioneer of women’s programming on KBOO. From the mid-’70s to the mid-’80s she had a bi-weekly program, first called “Women Reading Women’s Writings” and later “Women’s Voice,” on which she read diverse fiction and nonfiction.

We are saddened by the sudden loss of long-time friend and volunteer Jim Braun, 79, who passed away August 24, after suffering a cerebral hemorrhage from a bad fall.

Jim was a native of Portland and was dedicated to community radio. He was not on the air very often but you would recognize his rich, deep voice on early morning classical shows in the 1990’s, a monthly Brazilian show, and occasional jazz substitutions.

Jim did a huge amount of behind-the-scenes production and news work. He recorded literally thousands of hours of public affairs programming off the satellite system, engineered morning Radiozines, and was co-producer of the monthly Indian show, “Mandala,” for over ten years.

Like many music junkies, Jim had one of the largest and most eclectic record collections on Earth.  He constantly dazzled KBOO programmers with historic vinyl rarities that he had acquired.  We have learned that Jim has donated his body for medical research. KBOO is making changes to our evening lineup, starting November 3rd. We are adding new rock, hip hop, and world music shows, opening time for guest programmers, and adding more public affairs in the evening from an African American perspective. Several shows are going off the air, and others are moving to a new day and time.
