In February, a group of scholars, activists, journalists, writers and thinkers met at Portland State University for a day of series and discussions called The Arab Spring: A Year That Changed the World.

The conference, organized by the campus group Students United for Palestinian Equal Rights, or SUPER, aimed to examine the events of the Arab Spring, its regional and international implications, and its effects on the future of Palestine.

The second hour of the special features a lecture by political science professor, author, and writer of The Angry Arab News Service blog As'ad AbuKhalil, who speaks on the United States' role in the Arab Spring.

One year after the launch of the Arab Spring, the people’s revolutions continue across the Arab world – from north Africa to the Persian Gulf, a generation of youth have risen up to challenge the entrenched rule of dictators and monarchies. Jenka Soderberg spoke about the origins of the uprising with Al Jazeera’s Marwan Bishara, author of The Invisible Arab: The Promise and Peril of the Arab Revolutions.

Richard Heinberg of the Post Carbon Institute says Hallett and Wright deliver a brilliant overview of the dilemma posed by our society's profound dependence on a depleting, non-renewable resource that is becoming more scarce and unaffordable almost by the month."

Steve Hallett is an associate professor in the Department of Botany and Plant Pathology at Purdue University. His previous appointments include McGill University, Canada, and the University of Queensland, Australia.

John Wright is a journalist specializing in energy and environmental issues with over thirty-five years of experience. He is currently the Latin America news editor for Energy News Today, but has also worked for Knight-Ridder, Dow Jones, and the Associated Press. He is the author of The Obama Haters.
