In this final broadcast, Hope Shand, Research Director for the ETC Group and I discuss their new report describing efforts by the ag-biotech industry to patent 'climate-ready' genes which would theoretically allow our most common agricultural crops to continue thriving in the warm future confronting us all.
Building on the work of visionPDX, the Portland Plan is a citywide effort to guide the physical, economic, social, cultural and environmental development of Portland over the next 30 years. City Repair, among many projects, seeks to activate people to be part of the communities around them, as well as part of the decision-making that shapes the future of their communities. So it was only natural to invite both Gil Kelly, Planning Director for the City of Portland, and Mark Lakeman from City Repair to talk about how these efforts can work together toward a better future Portland for us all.
Today I spoke with Michelle Richardson, Legislative Counsel for the American Civil Liberties Union, regarding the status of various domestic surveillance programs and tactics. Featured are the National Security Agency's 'Terrorist' Surveillance Program and the FBI's use of National Security Letters.
After years of equivocating behind the scenes, I have decided to cease production of this program as of the end of this month. This program provides a lot of context and my personal reflections on what this airtime has meant to me.
Here in the U.S. we've all noticed that food prices have significantly increased over the past months (years). However compared to the sometimes violent impact in dozens of countries around the world (1, 2, 3, 4), most of us in the U.S. are still faring pretty well. You've likely read about the supposed causes, but are demand from China & India, climate change and biofuels really the whole story? Not according to Anuradha Mittal, who on this show describes how decades of failed trade policies have contributed to the current situation, and offers many solutions.
A discussion with Michael Mariotte, Executive Director of the Nuclear Information & Resource Service, about the possibility of a nuclear power relapse in the U.S., and around the world.

A conversation with Canupa Gluha Mani (aka Duane Martin Sr.) from the Strongheart Civil Rights Movement about the declaration (pdf) earlier this month by the Lakota Indian Nation of independence and secession from the United States. He was a member of the delegation which delivered the official documents to the U.S. State Department. The Lakota Freedom Movement has extensive documentation related to the reasons for their action.

A double header today. First a look at the (domestic) nuclear power industry, long thought dead, but poised for a possible resurgence thanks to congressional actions and the fear of climate change and global warming. But is it appropriate? That's what Michael Mariotte, Executive Director of the Nuclear Information & Resource Service, and I will discuss in the first half.
Then Bob Fitrakis from Free Press will join to discuss a report (pdf) released last Friday by Ohio's Secretary of State which confirmed the presence of "critical security failures” in Ohio's 2004 election. This has led the Secretary to call for a ban on touch-screen voting machines. And just yesterday Colorado's Secretary of State called into question the reliability and accuracy of most of their electronic voting machines.
Investigative journalist Tim Shorrock speaks about the new, but interrupted, National Applications Office (NAO). He has written extensively about the privatization of intelligence, and how private contractors drive domestic surveillance policy, and then secure lucrative contracts.
Featuring Emi Maclean, Staff Attorney with the Guantanamo Global Justice Initiative at the Center for Constitutional Rights. Today, CCR went before the U.S. Supreme Court to argue two cases (docket 1, 2) regarding Guantanamo detainees and habeas corpus. Described as "the showdown of the year" for the Court, the cases (Al Odah v. U.S. & Boumediene v. Bush) squarely challenge The Military Commissions Act of 2006.

We'll use Kevin's latest book, Ending Slavery, as a springboard for conversation about success stories.

Since Summer 2006, I've been fortunate enough to work here, but along with other factors, it has seriously inhibited my ability to maintain this page, which as you can see below, I greatly enjoyed doing.
I will soon again be able to dedicate (some) time to updating this tremendously out-of-date page, including posting audio RIGHT HERE. Check out the links above for your audio fix in the meanwhile. Thanks.

The Biological and Toxin Weapons Convention (1975) prohibits any signatory from ever developing, producing, stockpiling or otherwise acquiring microbial or other biological agents that have no peaceful purpose. The U.S., through the Department of Homeland Security, is claiming that its plans to build an unusually secretive National Biodefense Analysis and Countermeasures Center qualify under this exception. But critics claim that the facility will violate the Convention, and further spur an expanding global interest in producing biological weapons. Ed Hammond from the Sunshine Project joins me to discuss this particular issue, and biological weapons research in general.

We investigated efforts within Congress ( HR 3277, HR 2470, S 3521) to create a sunset commission, despite broad public opposition, which could force federal programs to plead for their existence before an unelected body with the power to recommend whether they live, die, or are minimized. The Bush plan is led by Clay Johnson III (also), Director of the White House Office of Management and Budget (wiki).
Robert Shull, Director of Regulatory Policy with OMB Watch joined me to discuss current congressional activities related to this issue, and you can learn more at OMB's sunset commission resource center (6-27 update).

Network neutrality is a hot topic across the political spectrum, with the House approving one bill, without an important amendment (PDF), and not granting another (PDF) a vote. The issue has moved to the Senate where competing bills (Stevens, Snowe/Dorgan) are moving through committee, with full floor votes anticipated in July. If you use the internet (and you are now), you should take a look at this issue, as it will likely impact your future ability to ramble around the internet in the way you've been accustomed. Jeanine Kenney, Senior Policy Analyst with Consumers Union was my guest today.

The state secrets privilege (also), created from a 1953 Supreme Court ruling (U.S. v. Reynolds) that hinged on fraudulent testimony (1,2,3,4) is a series of United States legal precedents allowing the federalgovernment the ability to dismiss legal cases that it claims would threaten foreign policy, military intelligence or national security. The Bush administration has employed this tactic vastly more frequently than any other, contributing to elevated concern regarding its commitment to constitutional rule.
Joining the program are William Weaver, among the few to write about the privilege from an academic perspective, an Associate Professor of Political Science at the University of Texas - El Paso, and Michael Avery, a Suffolk University law professor who has been involved with the Center for Constitutional Rights on a lawsuit recently challenged by a Justice Department petition (pdf) based on the state secret privilege.
