Portland Youth Commission Implemented to Advise City

School of the Americas Protest

Twenty-five thousand people gathered last weekend at fort Benning, Georgia, for the 18th annual vigil to close the School of the Americas – now known as the Western Hemispheric Institute for Security Studies.            

  The school has been documented to be a training ground for central and south American military officials, many of whom have engaged in torture and attacks on civilians after being trained at the School by U.S. Military officials.

Among the participants was Josh Harris, who spoke today with KBOO’s Crystal Leighty.

Climate change protest in Portland

On Saturday the United nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change released it’s new report on Global Warming.

The UN panel, which shared the Nobel Peace prize with Al Gore , said there is no doubt, Global warming is happening and  people all over the earth are feeling it’s effects.

The National Environmental Trust sponsored an action at the World Trade Center in Downtown Portland to coincide with the reports release.

Speakers at the event were  there to call on Oregonians  and their senators to help pass legislation that would reduce carbon emissions eighty  percent by the year 2050.

Portland rally: "We are all traffic"

Responding to the rash of recent bike collisions and injuries Portland’s bike community stood in solidarity underneath the Hawthorne bridge this past Saturday.

KBOO’s Michael Ianello spoke with Jonathan Maus from Bike Portland.org about the rally and what Portlanders can do to increase respect on the cities roads.

Renaming of Interstate to Chavez postponed, background on Chavez

And the City Council postponed its vote on whether to change the name of Interstate Avenue to Cesar Chavez Avenue.  The item was originally scheduled for this morning’s city council meeting, but will now be voted on tomorrow at 3 pm at City Hall.

With all the controversy surrounding the renaming, KBOO news would like to take a short moment to give a little background as to who Cesar Chavez was. 

Cesar Chavez founded the Farm Labor Organizing Committee in the early 1960s, and used Gandhian-style non-violence and boycotts to bring about better working conditions for farmworkers in California and around the country.

Oregon Coalition Fights to Remove Klamath Dams

Electricity consumer advocates, joined by commercial salmon fishermen, Native American tribes and conservation groups today called on customers of Pacific Power to join the struggle to remove four Klamath dams – and save themselves some money.

Pacific Power is a subsidiary of Pacificorp.  The company has refused a proposal to remove four dams on the Klamath River, instead putting the cost of an upgrade on reatepayers.

Economic reports by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission and the California Energy Commission conclude that removing the outdated dams is cheaper than making the upgrades necessary to get a new operating license.

Rule Limits Access to City Council

PROTESTERS GATHERED FOR THE SIXTEENTH WEEK IN A ROW IN FRONT OF REPRESENTATIVE EARL BLUMENAUER’S OFFICE THIS AFTERNOON.

THEY ARE CALLING ON BLUMENAUER TO SUPPORT THE IMPEACHMENT OF GEORGE W. BUSH AND DICK CHENEY. A RESOLUTION WAS INTRODUCED IN THE HOUSE THIS WEEK BY DENNIS KUCINICH.
