KBOO is Community Supporting Radio

KBOO is Community Supporting Radio, plain and simple. We are here to build, strengthen and enhance community – not exploit its citizens. Our programming is based on the needs of the community, not financial gain or commercial viability.

Community Supporting Radio provides airtime for local artists, musicians, and cultural activities. It promotes awareness of community-based organizations, services and issues and educates listeners about how to get involved. It trains individuals with vital skills in radio broadcasting; giving voice to the many diverse communities that KBOO serves.

It takes courage to remain independent, commercial-free and Community Supporting Radio - it also takes donations from listeners, underwriting from local businesses and organizations, and grants from regional foundations. Airtime is not free, it requires thousands of dollars each month just to keep the radio station operating – but KBOO must do more than just “stay on the air”.

To fulfill our charter and our promise to you, KBOO has embraced a mandate to grow, stabilize and have the resources necessary to meet the demands of these uncertain and chaotic times. Help KBOO evolve, so we can better respond to and meet the needs of the community. Please, let us hear from you now!

Keep KBOO thriving and growing as we enter our 45th year. Support our renewed efforts to increase our outreach, expand our presence in the community with new programming and more on-location broadcasts, and lastly empower Portland’s citizens by providing a forum for a diversity of viewpoints and ideas.

Please, give what you can – every dollar helps. Your contribution is greatly valued and appreciated. Donate now!

As always, in solidarity – The Station Navigator, Lynn Fitch

An independent voice for 45 years

December 2012

2013 marks the 45th anniversary of KBOO Community Radio going on the air. Since 1968, KBOO has brought you news, information and music you won’t hear anywhere else on the radio dial. Thanks to you, KBOO is still broadcasting and continues to be commercial-free and listener-supported.

From a humble beginning in a roach-infested basement closet, with a ten-watt transmitter, and a few stalwart volunteers, KBOO survived. Today, KBOO has 25,500 watts of power, hundreds of volunteers, and we own our station/office building. KBOO has flourished and ingrained itself as a true Portland icon—and we remain, and ever will be, an independent radio voice for Portland.

To commemorate this achievement, KBOO is going to intensify efforts to expand our reach, engage more people and offer exciting new programming. We are stepping into larger shoes, to become the radio station that Portland—and the entire Cascadia region—deserves in these uncertain, turbulent and changing times.

Now, more than ever, WE need KBOO—a courageous, progressive, people-powered radio station that corporate media can’t turn off. KBOO is independent and will never be silenced. Can you help fuel our revolutionary growth and expansion?

As always, we turn to you our listeners, for support. With you by our side, KBOO can, and will, become the radio station our founders envisioned long ago. With a meaningful gift today, you will fuel the flames of true community radio—independent voices creating radio for the people.

Please give generously. Every dollar is deeply valued and will be put to good use.

Thank you so much for your continued support.

In Solidarity,

12/5 KBOO Happy Hour Listening Tour

Categories:

I'd like to invite you and all KPOJ supporters to a "Happy Hour Listening Tour" at the KBOO studios, next Wednesday, December 5th, between 4:00 - 6:00 pm. KBOO is located at 20 SE 8th Ave.

Please join us and listen to Democracy Now!, watch our all-volunteer news team create the evening news, meet other volunteers who produce the M-F morning Public Affairs programming, staff who keep the doors open and provide public radio production training, and our board who oversee the KBOO Foundation. I'm sure some of our diverse, music show hosts will be on hand as well.

Enjoy refreshments and the chance to meet your community radio station - up close and personal. If we can't convince you to throw your support for progressive radio in our direction, then perhaps there is a way for KBOO to support your efforts to keep a diversity of voices and choices on the airwaves.

KBOO is a "community supporting" radio station, and here to serve the under-served, which progressive talk radio now could now be considered to be. It would be great to meet you, and other KPOJ listeners and supporters. Feel free to send this out to your mailing list, we look forward to welcoming all of you with open arms.
